As may be supposed, we’d all grown a tad weary of the histrionics. Mister Dean, who had been watching from the stalls, leapt on to the stage. Well, as close to leaping as a creature with the physique and complexion of a Dutch Edam cheese may get. I swear he was nearly as fat as the then Prince Regent, whom I have heard needed to be lowered onto his mistresses with a harness (those unfortunate damsels must have been in mortal dread of it snapping.) Whatever money they made from such ghastly endeavours they certainly earned.

But I digress; Gabriel Dean bellowed that Giffard should sack that “posturing catamite” for Dean’s own nephew could act the part better. The youthful relative in question dawdled in the wings chewing tobacco, looking for the world as if he had more hair than wit. Jake hurled his spear and palm-frond hat at Brooks and stormed off stage. Well the rest of us breathed a sigh of relief and got on with our lines. I adjusted my grass skirt and dashed on stage to ply my art before they could change their minds.

It was then that our backer made his ill-fated announcement that he intended to hold a garden party at Castle House and expected his paid-for cast of thespians to perform short excerpts from the play to entertain his crippled child and a few select guests. He made it abundantly clear that a certain sodomite was emphatically not invited to partake and that the gormless nephew Ralph would be taking the part for those scenes.

The date was set for some ten days hence and Giffard, for which transgression it took a considerable quantity of gin to forgive, visited the burden of preparing the gormless Ralph for his theatrical debut upon my shoulders. This, I have no delusions, was because of my junior status within the troupe. Anyone else would have told him what to do with such a suggestion; I alone dared not.
